At least 15 newborns were killed when a fire broke out in the genecology ward of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on Wednesday, according to local media and rescue sources.
PIMS officials said 16 newborns were in the nursery when the fire started, with only one infant rescued.
Local reports said the blaze began after an air-conditioner compressor exploded inside the nursery. However, initial reports from PIMS officials cited a possible short circuit, and the exact cause remains under investigation.
Rescue teams responded to the incident and brought the fire under control.
Firefighters were conducting cooling operations at the site after extinguishing the blaze, according to local reports.
The incident has raised concerns over safety measures at the hospital’s neonatal facilities as authorities assess the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
