An Air India pilot who flew a turbulence-hit Phuket-Delhi flight has reportedly tested positive for a psychoactive substance. A second test is pending, while both pilots remain off duty as authorities investigate the incident.

The pilot of an Air India flight that encountered severe turbulence while travelling from Phuket to Delhi is reportedly suspected of testing positive for a psychoactive substance during a post-flight drug screening.
According to sources, the pilot-in-command tested positive during an initial test conducted in Delhi after the August 4 flight. However, the result is not considered final, as a second test has been carried out and its outcome is still awaited.
Air India said it has not received the test results and therefore cannot comment on the reported findings. Both pilots have been removed from flight duties while the investigation continues.
The flight, carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members, experienced heavy turbulence and a sudden loss of altitude during its journey to Delhi. At least 13 passengers and four crew members were injured, with two crew members suffering spinal injuries.
Aviation authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The aircraft has been moved to a hangar, while its flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder have been secured for examination.
If a pilot is eventually confirmed to have failed a drug test, aviation rules provide for rehabilitation and further testing before returning to duty, depending on the circumstances and whether it is a first or repeat offence.
