Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has emphasized that parliaments must function with clear purpose and independence to maintain balance in governance and public trust.
Speaking at the opening of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Small Branches Workshop, the Vice President said strong and independent parliaments lie at the core of democratic governance. He noted that the Maldives highly values its relationship with the Commonwealth and remains committed to strengthening its democratic institutions.
“A parliament must function with a clear purpose and independence. Without these, the balance between the branches of government weakens, and the people's trust will diminish,” he said.
He added that the workshop, which commenced today, is a beneficial initiative for the Maldives.
Also addressing the ceremony, Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening accountability and public participation in parliament.
He pointed to the introduction of an e-petition system, which allows citizens to submit petitions directly to the Majlis through a digital platform, significantly increasing public involvement in the legislative process.
The Speaker further noted additional efforts to promote inclusivity, including Practice Parliament programs conducted for youth and women.
