Ababa, Ethiopia — The Maldives is taking part in the 65th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), represented by Amjad Abdulla, Director General of the Climate Change Department and Energy at the relevant ministry.
A key focus of the meeting is the development of timelines and work plans for the three IPCC working groups responsible for preparing the organisation’s Seventh Assessment Report (AR7).
Participants are also expected to discuss budget reviews, administrative and operational matters, and ways artificial intelligence could support the IPCC’s work.
For the Maldives, a low-lying island nation exposed to climate-related risks, scientific assessments are important for understanding the impacts of climate change and shaping effective responses.
The country has emphasised the need to strengthen international cooperation, expand scientific knowledge and ensure that climate policies are based on reliable research.
The Maldives also considers evidence-based global climate action essential to building resilience and reducing the vulnerability of island communities.
