Bangladesh Medical University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. F.M. Siddiqui and Bangladesh High Commissioner to the Maldives Md. Nazmul Islam have held discussions on the increasing number of deaths among Bangladeshi nationals living in the Maldives.

The meeting focused on conducting comprehensive investigations to identify the medical and environmental factors behind the deaths and taking urgent measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Medical Investigation and Bilateral Cooperation

During the meeting, Professor Siddiqui offered professional advice and said Bangladesh Medical University was prepared to support efforts to address the issue through relevant information and cooperation with government ministries and agencies in both countries.

The two officials also discussed strengthening educational cooperation, including opportunities for Maldivian doctors to pursue advanced medical education and professional training through Bangladesh Medical University.

Professor Siddiqui expressed hope that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) could be established between the Maldives and Bangladesh, similar to agreements the university has with India and China.

Bangladeshi nationals make up a significant part of the foreign workforce in the Maldives, working across various industries, including construction and other labour-intensive sectors. Bangladeshi workers have previously died in workplace accidents and incidents at residential premises.
