First Lady Sajidha Mohamed says the government wants to build a Maldives where older people can live healthy and happy lives with proper care and support.
K. Kaashidhoo: First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has called for greater attention to the health and wellbeing of senior citizens, stressing the need to support them physically, mentally and socially.
She made the remarks at the opening of a senior citizens’ gathering in Kaashidhoo held to mark World Mental Health Day.
Sajidha said mental health is important at every stage of life, especially in old age. She also praised senior citizens for their contributions to the country and for raising future generations.
The First Lady said caring for older people is also an important value in Islam. She stressed that their physical health, mental wellbeing and social needs must all be taken into account.
She said her goal is to see senior citizens enjoy better health and a happier life. She added that the country’s healthcare services are working towards this goal.
Sajidha said more senior citizen centres have opened across the country in recent years. The centres provide activities that help older people stay active and enjoy time with others.
She expects these centres to play a bigger role in the years ahead.
She also said gatherings like the one in Kaashidhoo give senior citizens a chance to learn about mental health, share their experiences and discuss their concerns. These discussions can help them find support and better ways to deal with life’s challenges.
