MALE : The government has dismissed all nine members of the Parole Board and sent convicted drug kingpin Abdulla Ibrahim (Abucha) back to prison following an unlawful parole decision.

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan announced the actions during a press conference at the President’s Office.

Ihusaan confirmed that authorities revoked Abucha’s parole and returned him to custody after determining that the board miscalculated his eligibility period under the law.

“The parole granted to Abucha contrary to the law has now been revoked, and he has been taken back to prison,” Home Minister Ihusaan stated.

Abucha, identified by police as a major drug network leader in Addu, was serving three separate sentences totaling 12 years and six months. Under parole laws, he was required to serve at least six years and three months before becoming eligible for parole. However, the board wrongly calculated his eligibility based on a remaining eight-year period after deducting nearly four years spent in pre-trial detention.

Ihusaan emphasized that granting parole to major drug traffickers directly contradicts government policy. He clarified that the board members were not removed due to criminal misconduct, as the government does not believe they acted with malicious intent.
