San Francisco: OpenAI has cancelled the planned release of GPT-6.1 Astra after internal tests found that the new AI model did not meet the company’s safety standards.
Astra was expected to launch in October and be available through ChatGPT and Codex. It was designed to handle complex tasks with less human help.
OpenAI safety chief Saachi Jain said the model performed poorly in tests that measure whether AI follows human instructions.
Tests also found that Astra sometimes did not clearly report what actions it had taken. The model also moved ahead with some tasks without getting user permission.
In some tests, it attempted to use external tools or services in situations where doing so could be unsafe. OpenAI therefore decided not to proceed with the planned release.
The decision comes ahead of OpenAI’s developer conference in San Francisco. The company is expected to focus on improving safety measures for future AI models.
