Tokyo: Japan is facing a wave of cyberattacks targeting businesses across multiple sectors, prompting the government to strengthen its cybersecurity response and urge organisations to review their defences.
Recent incidents have affected major companies, including telecommunications provider SoftBank, brokerage firm Daiwa Securities and convenience store operator Lawson. The attacks have raised concerns about the security of customer information and the resilience of corporate networks.
The Japanese government has called on organisations to review their cybersecurity measures as attacks become more frequent and sophisticated.
A recent report by cybersecurity company Trend Micro found that September saw an unusually high number of organisations reporting breaches, with 13 incidents disclosed in a single day, the highest daily total recorded so far this year.
Authorities have also highlighted the growing risks posed by artificial intelligence, which can help cybercriminals automate certain hacking activities and carry out attacks with less technical expertise. However, the use of AI has not been confirmed in every recent incident.
The breaches have raised concerns about the possible exposure of personal and financial information held by companies. Security experts warn that stolen information could be misused in fraud, phishing attempts and other criminal activities.
Japan has been expanding its cyber defence capabilities, including measures to improve cooperation between government agencies and private companies and to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure.
Authorities are now facing pressure to ensure that businesses and public institutions can respond more effectively to cyber threats as attacks continue to evolve.
