NEW YORK: Power and political protection cannot grant any state immunity from accountability, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef declared at the 81st United Nations General Assembly while calling for immediate action against Israeli aggression in Palestine.
Addressing world leaders, Vice President Latheef emphasized that no country should be exempt from international law simply because of its strength or influential allies.
“No state can ask others to respect its sovereignty while violating the sovereignty of neighboring states. Power and political protection cannot grant immunity from accountability,” the Vice President said.
He warned that public statements of condemnation are no longer enough, urging member states and the UN to ask what concrete steps will be taken to stop the violence.
The Vice President highlighted that global regulations exist but are being applied unfairly.
“The problem is not a lack of laws. Clear rules and principles exist. What is missing is equal enforcement. International law must not yield to powerful nations while ignoring the weak,” he stated, calling for standard enforcement without exceptions.
Furthermore, Vice President Latheef reiterated the demand for an immediate end to the Israeli genocide in Gaza and the military occupation of Palestinian territory. He urged the international community to secure fast and safe delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinian citizens, while re-confirming the Maldives’ unwavering support for an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
