MALÉ: An unofficial campaign on social media platforms is pushing former Vice President Faisal Naseem to run in the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential primary, proposing Malé City Mayor Adam Azim as his potential running mate.

Both figures aligned closely with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s faction. Solih has yet to issue any public statement endorsing candidates for the upcoming primary. However, Faisal has stated across multiple public forums that he is actively working toward contesting the primary and held a private meeting with Solih on Sunday to discuss the party’s presidential ticket.

The prospective campaign has sparked pushback from internal MDP factions, particularly supporters associated with former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail and former President Mohamed Nasheed. Critics within these factions point out that Faisal only officially signed on to the MDP in February 2024, following the party’s defeat in the 2023 presidential election, after serving his five-year term as Vice President representing the Jumhooree Party (JP).

The MDP presidential race is steadily taking shape as internal party sources report plans to hold an early primary in early 2027. Party insiders indicate that holding the primary early will allow sufficient time to resolve factional divisions, build unity, and formulate a cohesive strategy ahead of the next presidential election.

  • Announced Candidates So Far: Former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, and Hulhumale’ North MP Dr. Ahmed Shamheed. Faisal said he’s discussing it with Solih and other associates before making a final decision, but he is interested in running.
