MALÉ: The Elections Commission (EC) has strongly condemned allegations made by the People’s National Front (PNF) regarding fraudulent membership registrations and unauthorized party removals.
In an official statement released today, the electoral body rejected claims that individuals were being added to or removed from political parties without their knowledge. The Commission emphasized that the integration of the digital ID system ‘e-Faas’ into the political party membership portal has created a transparent, secure, and direct system trusted by the public.
The EC clarified that under the current digital framework, joining or leaving a political party is an individual choice conducted directly between the citizen and the party via their personal e-Faas account. The Commission noted that neither the EC nor any third party has the technical capability to alter membership records or transfer individuals to another party without the account holder’s direct authorization.
Cautioning against unverified claims that damage public trust in the electoral system, the EC urged all political organizations to conduct their activities responsibly and refrain from spreading false narratives.
The People’s National Front (PNF), led by former President Abdulla Yameen, has submitted a formal case to the Maldives Police Service against Elections Commission President Mohamed Shakeel. The party accused Shakeel and the Commission of facilitating unauthorized party removals and fraudulent membership transfers, calling for a criminal investigation into the electoral chief’s handling of membership records.
