Male’: The People’s National Congress (PNC) High Council has approved a resolution to invite President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to contest for a second presidential term in 2028 without a party primary.

Resolution approved unanimously

The resolution was submitted by PNC general member Abdulla Ibrahim during a special High Council meeting held at the request of council members. It was passed unanimously with 1,119 members present, according to reports.

Ibrahim said the resolution was based on what he described as the President’s work since taking office, including efforts related to national development and other areas of government.

The resolution also cited President Muizzu’s work on national sovereignty, economic development, technological initiatives, housing and international issues, including advocacy for Palestine.

Vice President backs resolution

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef supported the resolution during the meeting, highlighting the President’s efforts to safeguard national independence and maintain the country’s stability and development.

Latheef also spoke about the government’s efforts to strengthen Islamic values, saying these were among the reasons he believed Muizzu should be given another term.

PNC Chairperson and People’s Majlis Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla described securing a second term for Muizzu as an important task for the party. The resolution states that Article 88 of the PNC’s regulations provides for a sitting president seeking a second term to receive the party ticket without a primary.
