MALÉ: The Unicode Consortium has officially incorporated the Maldivian Rufiyaa symbol into the Unicode Standard Version 18.0, assigning the character the designated code point U+20C2.
According to the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), adding the national currency sign to the global Unicode Standard allows websites, mobile applications, and digital software worldwide to display the symbol uniformly. Central bank officials highlighted the achievement as a major milestone toward simplifying the integration and rendering of the currency symbol across digital devices and international financial systems. The MMA expressed gratitude to all organizations and technical contributors who supported the multi-year effort to achieve Unicode standardization.
First unveiled by the MMA in 2022 to establish a unique graphic representation for the currency, the symbol features the Thaana letter “Raa” marked with an additional horizontal line. While the Unicode Consortium manages universal character encoding to ensure currency symbols are recognized across operating systems, official currency designs remain under the authority of individual host nations.
