Male’: The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has unanimously approved amendments to its constitution during the first session of its top council meeting held today.

The revised constitution was made public following the approval, with the changes introducing new structures and responsibilities within the party.

The session was attended by 1,064 delegates. PNC Secretary General Moosa Fathuhy Adam presented the changes and explained that the main purpose is to improve the party’s operations as its membership continues to grow.

New groups introduced

The amendments introduce several new groups and activities to increase member participation, including a council for Islamic scholars, a women’s wing, a youth wing and an activity for senior citizens.

Fathuhy said the changes would allow the party to expand its work into more areas while making its internal operations more effective. The new constitution also sets out clearer responsibilities for heads and deputy heads of party divisions and steering committees.

The party has also established 15 committees to strengthen its work in different fields. These include committees focusing on economic affairs, national security, health, social issues, science and technology.

Changes made over the years

According to the party, the revised constitution provides detailed rules on the party’s structure, internal elections, policies and other areas of its operation. The latest amendments are part of a series of changes made to the constitution since the party was established.

The PNC’s constitution was first approved at a meeting held on January 27, 2019. Further amendments were made at the party’s first top council meeting on April 26 of the same year, followed by changes approved in 2022, 2023 and 2025.

The latest amendments, approved by the members’ council on August 6, were formally endorsed by the top council today. The PNC said the changes are intended to strengthen the party’s administration and allow it to carry out its political activities across a wider range of areas.
