HA. Uligan, Maldives: Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has invited interested parties to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the development and operation of a yacht marina in HA. Uligan, the northernmost island of the Maldives.

According to MPL, the project is intended to establish Uligan as a high quality maritime and tourism destination through the development of a modern yacht marina.

The project will be developed on a 70,471-square-metre area of land allocated under an agreement between MPL and Uligan Council.

MPL is undertaking the core infrastructure works for the marina. These works include a five meter deep basin, a breakwater and an international-standard entry facility that meets International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) requirements.

The selected developer or operator will be responsible for managing the marina and developing additional tourism and recreational facilities. These are expected to include a hotel or boutique resort, restaurants, facilities for visitors, water sports services and wellness amenities.

The operator will also be expected to promote Uligamu internationally as a yachting destination and establish partnerships with charter companies.

Strategic location for yacht tourism

MPL said Uligan is strategically located along major yacht routes in the Indian Ocean.

The island lies along a route connecting Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Mediterranean, with a significant number of yachts travelling through the region each year.

The proposed marina is therefore aimed at providing these vessels with organised services and facilities while turning the existing yacht traffic into an economic opportunity for the northern region.

MPL said the project forms part of its longer term strategy to strengthen economic activity in the north and expand tourism opportunities.

The EOI is open to interested companies as well as joint ventures.

The EOI stage will be used to identify suitable parties for the next phase, after which shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit detailed technical and financial proposals through a Request for Proposal process.
