Male’: The government is reviewing proposals to develop a dedicated Cat Island, Fisheries and Agriculture Minister Ahmed Shiyam said.
Speaking to journalists at the President’s Office today, Minister Shiyam said developing a dedicated island would require significant investment, but several parties, including an international group, have expressed interest and submitted proposals.
He said the proposals are currently being evaluated, with hopes that the project could benefit the country’s pet community and attract international interest.
Minister Shiyam also said work is underway to expand the “Olhu Hiyaa” cat facility in Hulhumale’ Phase 2.
The facility currently cares for around 280 cats, with the expansion expected to increase its capacity to more than 500.
