A 35 year old man has been taken into police custody after allegedly assaulting a car owner, stealing his car and causing a series of crashes in Fuvahmulah, injuring an 18 year old woman and a nine year old girl.

A man has been taken into police custody after allegedly assaulting a car owner, stealing his car and causing a series of crashes in Fuvahmulah City last night.
Maldives Police Service said the incident was reported at around 6:22pm after a car being driven near Fuvahmulah, Moodige crashed into a motorcycle. The driver then allegedly continued driving without stopping and crashed into another car and a tree.
Police said the 35 year old Maldivian man who was driving the car has since been taken into custody.
According to the police investigation, the man is suspected of being under the influence of drugs when the incident happened. Police said he allegedly assaulted the owner of the car and threatened to damage the vehicle before taking it and driving away.
Two injured in crash
An 18 year old woman who was riding the motorcycle and her nine year old female passenger were injured in the crash. Both were taken to Fuvahmulah Hospital for treatment.
Police said neither of them suffered serious injuries.
The two cars and the motorcycle involved in the incident were also damaged. Police are continuing to investigate the case.
