Hisaan Hussain has resigned as deputy chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party, saying the position no longer carries a valid mandate following the resignation of former party leader Abdulla Shahid.

MALÉ: Hisaan Hussain has resigned from his position as Vice President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), submitting her resignation to party chairperson Mohamed Nasheed on Thursday.
Hisaan was appointed vice president in July 2024 after then vice president Mohamed Shifaz resigned and left the party.
In her resignation letter, Hisaan said the MDP’s current regulations do not provide for the deputy chairperson to be elected directly by ordinary party members. Instead, the position is appointed by the party’s National Council on the recommendation of the party president.
Hisaan said her position and mandate were therefore linked to the tenure of the party president who nominated him, Abdulla Shahid.
She said remaining in the position without a new mandate would not be consistent with democratic principles following Shahid’s resignation as MDP president.
Hisaan also assured the party leadership and members that he would continue contributing to the MDP as an ordinary member.
