Former President Mohamed Nasheed has criticised President Mohamed Muizzu over proposed changes to the decentralisation law, warning that the amendments could undermine island councils and residents’ rights.

G.Dh. Thinadhoo, Maldives: Former President and MDP Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed has accused President Dr Mohamed Muizzu of working to “destroy the Maldives”, while opposing proposed amendments that would give the Cabinet authority to remove land from the jurisdiction of island councils for government projects.
Speaking at an “Abaadhee 60” gathering held in G.Dh. Thinadhoo on Wednesday night, Nasheed said the proposed changes were particularly concerning for Thinadhoo and other islands in Gaafu Dhaalu and Gaafu Alif.
The amendments were submitted to the People’s Majlis by Thulhadhoo MP Abdul Hannan Aboobakuru. The proposal seeks to establish a mechanism allowing land under a council’s jurisdiction to be taken for state development projects.
Nasheed argued that the government should consider the historical significance of the affected islands and listen to residents who have taken to the streets in protest.
He said the dispute reflected a wider problem with centralized decision-making, arguing that excessive authority being concentrated in Malé was contributing to tensions between the central government and island communities.
Nasheed criticized the government’s approach to land under council control, saying residents would not remain silent while changes were made to their rights through amendments to the law.
He also warned that Maldivians would resist any action that he believes could push the country backwards.
“President Dr Muizzu, you are once again creating a good rebellion. You are working to destroy the Maldives,” Nasheed said.
He further said the government could not make decisions affecting the country without considering the wishes and consent of its people.
