The Fisheries Ministry plans to relocate Malé local market traders within a month to clear the site for construction of the new MVR 126.4 million market complex.

MALÉ: The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources is working to establish a temporary market and relocate traders within a month to clear the current local market site for construction of the new Malé Wet Market Complex.
State Minister Mohamed Muththalib said the former STO site and Thaiseykoshi are being considered as possible locations for the temporary market.
Trusting Maldives Pvt Ltd was awarded the MVR 126.4 million contract in March to develop the new complex, which will bring Malé’s fish and local markets together under one roof.
The six-storey complex will have a built-up area of more than 95,000 square feet and is expected to be completed within one year and eight months.
The building will have 455 market cells, while the basement will provide parking for up to 400 motorcycles. The top floor will feature a food court with café and restaurant facilities.
The project is part of Government efforts to modernise the market area, following upgrades to surrounding roads and improvements to the port.
