The Information Commissioner’s Office has launched a new action plan aimed at improving transparency, strengthening the RTI system and expanding public access to government information.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (iCOM) on Monday launched its Strategic Action Plan, setting out a roadmap through 2031 to improve access to government information.
The plan was unveiled at this year’s Right to Information (RTI) Symposium and focuses on strengthening transparency, enhancing opportunities to request information and improving iCOM’s institutional capacity.
Developed with support from the European Union and in partnership with UNDP Maldives under the Accountability and Integrity Matters (AIM) project, the strategy is based on a capacity assessment conducted last year.
Access to information remains a challenge, with iCOM statistics showing that 487 of the 712 complaints received last year were related to government institutions failing to respond to information requests.
The new plan aims to address such issues by strengthening implementation of the RTI Act and improving access to public information.
