MALÉ: The Ministry of Health has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Suwasevana Hospital in Sri Lanka to secure clinical internship opportunities for Maldivian medical graduates.
The agreement was signed during a special ceremony at the Ministry of Health by Minister of State for Health Khadheeja Abdulla Samad and Suwasevana Hospital Director Bandula Egodage.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Health Dr. Geela Ali highlighted that the partnership will significantly resolve challenges faced by medical graduates in obtaining practical clinical placements, expanding their hands-on training and professional capacity.
– Annual Quota: Suwasevana Hospital will provide clinical internship placements for 20 Maldivian medical students each year.
– First Formal Agreement: While Maldivian students previously completed internships in Sri Lanka through individual applications, this is the first formal institutional agreement signed between the Maldivian government and a Sri Lankan healthcare facility.
– Alternative Internship Locations: Beyond local placements at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Hulhumalé Hospital, Maldivian medical graduates primarily travel to Bangladesh to complete their required clinical internships.
