MALÉ: Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has been appointed as Chairman of the Advisory Board at Port Technology International (PTI), a leading trade journal and intelligence platform for the global ports and terminals sector.

In his new position, President Nasheed will provide strategic leadership, support international projects, and participate in global events to connect maritime industry leaders with senior policymakers and trade decision-makers.

Key Focus Areas and Initial Projects

According to an announcement on the PTI Portal, President Nasheed’s initial involvement will center on two major intelligence publications within the platform’s Global Transformation Series:

• Mawani: The Transformation of Saudi Arabia’s Ports: A print and digital study examining Saudi Arabia’s port network, infrastructure leadership, investment frameworks, and logistics targets under its Vision 2030 strategy.

• 10 Fastest-Growing Ports in South & Central America: An annual intelligence report set to launch at the CTAC Americas 2027 conference in Panama, analyzing regional trade drivers and resilient coastal infrastructure for climate-vulnerable economies.

• Global Engagement: Participating in select PTI events to facilitate high-level dialogues on maritime sustainability and international trade policies.

Commenting on his appointment, President Nasheed emphasized his ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability:

“I am honoured and delighted to join PTI’s Advisory Board. This affiliation reinforces my commitment to advancing sustainability, while contributing to a platform that has been publishing trusted industry insights for more than three decades.”

President Nasheed served as President of the Maldives from 2008 to 2012 as the nation’s first democratically elected head of state. He later served as Speaker of the People’s Majlis from 2019 to 2023. One of the founding members of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), he currently serves as its Chairperson, driving key party activism and democratic reform initiatives. Nasheed was also the party’s first elected chairperson.

Globally recognized for his climate advocacy, he previously convened an underwater cabinet meeting in 2009 to highlight rising sea levels, was named a Hero of the Environment by Time magazine, and received the UN Environment Programme’s Champion of the Earth award. Most recently, he completed his term as Secretary-General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) and the V20 Finance Ministers.
