Prominent Maldivian sports journalist Ahmed Saaid has been moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after his health condition deteriorated while receiving treatment at a hospital.

Saaid, who has been living with long-term kidney failure, reportedly became critically ill last night while undergoing dialysis. People close to him said he suffered a stroke during the treatment and remains in unstable condition.

The latest development comes as preparations were underway for Saaid to travel overseas for a kidney transplant. With support from well-wishers, efforts had been made to find a suitable donor and arrange the treatment.

Saaid was diagnosed with kidney failure in June 2018, when doctors found that his kidney function had fallen to around 13 percent. Despite his health challenges, he continued his career in sports journalism.

He has become a familiar voice in Maldivian sports coverage through his work as a commentator and presenter on various sports programmes.
