The Maldivian Democratic Party has invited members to submit proposed amendments to its charter ahead of its major national congress, where sweeping reform proposals will be presented.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the nation’s largest opposition party, has officially opened the opportunity for members to submit proposed amendments to its constitution and core policies.
The submission portal was launched in preparation for the party’s upcoming national congress, which was formally scheduled during the MDP National Council meeting held on August 2. Under the MDP constitution, holding a national congress every five years is a mandatory requirement to strengthen internal party democracy and update administrative structures.
Beyond standard internal administrative updates, party leadership is preparing to seek full congress endorsement for major structural changes. Newly elected MDP Chairperson, former president Mohamed Nasheed and senior party figure Fayyaz Ismail are planning to introduce key charter modifications as part of their broader “Bodu Badhalu” (Great Change) political reform agenda.
A central element of the “Bodu Badhalu” framework includes advocating for a constitutional restructuring of the national governance system. Nasheed and Fayyaz are seeking party support to split the executive branch into two separate positions—a Head of State and a Head of Government—while retaining a modified presidential framework. Under their joint proposal, Nasheed has backed Fayyaz to run for the Head of Government post, aiming to establish a formal endorsement during the September congress before pursuing broader national legislative changes.
A significant focus of the upcoming congress will center on institutionalizing the MDP’s internal operations as well. During his tenure as MDP Chairperson, Fayyaz initiated an extensive strategic roadmap aimed at transforming MDP from a traditional movement-based political entity into a fully structured, professional political institution.
Key proposals derived from Fayyaz’s institutional roadmap will be brought to the floor for delegate approval. These charter amendments aim to establish permanent administrative organs, formalize branch operations, streamline internal policymaking mechanisms, and ensure financial self-sustainability for long-term party governance.
