India: The Bombay High Court’s Goa bench has convicted former Tehelka magazine editor Tarun Tejpal in a 2013 rape case, overturning his acquittal by a trial court in 2021.
The court found Tejpal guilty of rape and sexual harassment in connection with the assault of a former colleague during a media event in Goa in November 2013. The case drew nationwide attention and became one of India’s most high-profile sexual assault cases.
Tejpal, who has consistently denied the allegations, can appeal the conviction before a higher court. His sentence is expected to be announced later, with the offence carrying a minimum prison term of 10 years and a maximum sentence of life imprisonment under Indian law.
The Goa government had challenged the 2021 acquittal, arguing that the trial court’s judgment was flawed. During the latest hearing, prosecutors urged the court to impose the maximum punishment.
