Concerns have been raised over waste entering the Hulhumalé lagoon during disposal operations, with WAMCO stating that lagoon cleaning does not fall under the corporation’s responsibility. WAMCO said it continues to carry out clean-up efforts in the area while the source of the waste is being questioned

Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) Managing Director Mujthaba Jaleel has said the corporation is not responsible for cleaning the Hulhumalé lagoon amid concerns over waste being dumped into the area.
His remarks came after North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim questioned WAMCO over complaints that waste enters the lagoon during disposal operations in Hulhumalé and sought details on measures being taken to address the issue.
Responding on social media, Mujthaba said plastic bottles collected from Hulhumalé are handled separately by two specialised organisations and are crushed before disposal, unlike the bottles found floating in the lagoon. He also noted that safari boats do not deliver waste directly to WAMCO’s disposal site and said the source of the waste in the lagoon should be investigated.
Although cleaning the lagoon is not part of WAMCO’s mandate, Mujthaba said the corporation carries out lagoon clean-up operations three days a week using a dedicated dinghy as a public service.
