The National Council of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has officially decided to host its national congress on September 19 following a majority vote.
The opposition MDP approved the date during a National Council meeting chaired by party Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Nasheed proposed holding the congress on September 19 to finalize key constitutional and organizational changes to the party before electing a new governing council.

Votes In Favor: 52 members
Key Motion: Scheduling Congress for September 19
During the debate, some council members raised concerns over holding the congress right before the current council’s term expires on September 25.
Nasheed clarified that reviewing the party charter must happen first, as structural changes could alter the setup of the upcoming governing body. He assured members that internal elections would proceed promptly after the congress without extending current terms.
The upcoming party congress is expected to debate several major internal policy reforms:
Chairperson Restrictions: Prohibiting party chairpersons from running in presidential primaries, even if they resign early.
Primary Timeline: Moving up the party’s presidential primary election schedule to next year.
Governance Structure: Reorganizing the administrative setup and national council composition.
Party leadership will begin organizing the venue and delegate registration for the September 19 congress, with detailed agendas to be distributed to local branches shortly.
