MALÉ, Maldives: President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to introduce smart identity cards in the Maldives within the next one and a half years as part of the government’s efforts to expand digital services.
Speaking on PSM’s “Nation Chat” programme, the President said the initiative is included under the Maldives 2.0 vision, which aims to develop a digital economy and modernise public services.
He explained that the smart ID card will include advanced features such as biometric data and digital chips. The card is expected to allow citizens to access services from different institutions and make payments through a single platform.
President Muizzu said a bill has been submitted to the People’s Majlis to create the legal framework for the project. He added that government institutions, state-owned companies, and banks will need to be connected to the system.
The President said the main objective of the project is to make services more efficient, reduce corruption, and allow people to access government services more easily from anywhere in the country.
