Former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has criticised the government’s decision to transfer waste from the Malé area to Boduthiladhunmathi, calling it an injustice to the people of the northern region and urging the decision to be reversed.

Former Foreign Minister and President of the MDP, Abdulla Shahid, has criticized the government, stating that the decision to dump waste from the Malé area onto the islands of Boduthiladhunmathi is a significant injustice to the residents of that region.
In a post on X today, Shahid stated that Boduthiladhunmathi is a region that symbolizes the identity of Maldivians in the north, inhabited by people eager for development. He characterized the act of dumping waste from the Malé area onto the pristine soil of these islands as an act of cruelty toward the residents.
“Dumping the ‘waste’ of the Malé area onto the island soil of Boduthiladhunmathi is a very great injustice to that region and its people! It is an act of cruelty. An insult!” Shahid said.
Describing the government’s decision as “flawed,” Shahid called for the decision to be reversed. He also urged the government to align its direction with the pulse of the people and return to the right path.
Shahid concluded his remarks with a warning to the government, stating that they “cannot treat the people of Boduthiladhunmathi this way.” This issue has already sparked concern and unrest among many residents in the north.
