President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Ambassador Thoriq Ibrahim to serve as the Maldives' Permanent Representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

MALÉ, Maldives: President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated former Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim to serve as the Maldives' Permanent Representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
The nomination was submitted to the People's Majlis on Monday. Thoriq, who is currently serving as the Maldives' Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has been proposed for the additional diplomatic role.
After the President's letter was read in Parliament, the nomination was referred to the Foreign Relations Committee for review.
Thoriq has served as Environment Minister under three different governments. He held the post during the administrations of former Presidents Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik and
Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, and was also the first Environment Minister in President Muizzu's administration.
IRENA is an international organisation that promotes the use of renewable energy and supports countries in transitioning to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
The agency was established in 2009 and has 171 member states, including the Maldives.
