Colombo, Sri Lanka – The High Commission of the Maldives in Sri Lanka hosted a reception in Colombo on Thursday to celebrate the Maldives' Independence Day, reaffirming the longstanding friendship and growing partnership between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka's Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, attended the event as the Guest of Honour. In his address, he highlighted the historic ties between the two nations, noting that the agreement recognizing the Maldives' independence was signed in Colombo in 1965.

Maldivian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Masood Imad emphasized the close relationship shared by the two countries and said President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's state visit to Sri Lanka in May had further strengthened bilateral cooperation and diplomatic relations.

The

celebration featured a showcase of Maldivian culture, with traditional performances including Boduberu, Baiypolhi, Maafathi dance, and Dhan'di Jehun. The performances were presented by Maldivian residents and students living in Sri Lanka.

According to the High Commission, the reception brought together more than 500 guests, including Sri Lankan ministers, provincial governors, deputy ministers, senior military officials, government representatives, business leaders, foreign ambassadors, and members of the diplomatic community.

The High Commission also expressed its appreciation to the businesses and sponsors whose support contributed to the successful organization of the Independence Day celebration.
