The High Court of the Maldives has rejected appeal applications filed by Ali Shaahil, the prime suspect in the August 2022 brutal murder of Shiaau Mohamed Saeed, challenging two separate convictions passed against him by the lower court.
Shaahil faces five distinct criminal charges stemming from the murder case. While the core trial for murder remains ongoing behind closed doors, the Criminal Court previously convicted him on two secondary counts—possession of pornography and cannabis consumption—sentencing him to three years, one month, and six days in prison.
After an initial appeal was turned down over incomplete documentation, Shaahil resubmitted appeal petitions to the High Court on July 23. However, the High Court Registrar officially rejected both submissions, stating that the filings failed to demonstrate valid legal grounds to review or overturn the lower court's judgment.

Additionally, the Criminal Court previously noted that the Attorney General's Office ceased providing state-funded defense counsel for Shaahil due to his repeated refusal to cooperate with assigned legal representation.
