The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has warned that legal action will be taken against individuals and businesses advertising weight loss products without scientific evidence.
MFDA said some products are being promoted in the Maldives with claims that they can treat diseases or cause major physical changes. The authority warned that such claims may mislead the public and could put people’s health at risk.
MFDA noted that products promoted without proper scientific research may have harmful effects, especially for people taking long-term medication for chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.
The authority stated that under food advertising regulations, it is not allowed to promote food products by making false claims about their quality or health benefits.
MFDA also clarified that information shared on social media and other platforms
to promote products will be considered advertising and must follow the required regulations.
Instead of depending on products with unproven claims, MFDA encouraged the public to focus on a healthy lifestyle by maintaining a balanced diet and reducing salt and sugar intake.
The authority also emphasized that regular physical activity remains one of the most effective ways to maintain good health.
