Measles cases rise to 166 in Maldives

The number of measles cases reported in the Maldives has increased to 166, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA). A total of 22 new cases were identified during the past week as health authorities continue efforts to control the spread of the disease.

The Maldives had previously achieved measles elimination status after successfully removing local transmission of the virus. However, cases have started increasing again due to new infections and gaps in vaccination coverage.

To control the spread of the disease, HPA has started a measles vaccination programme. So far, a total of 7,100 individuals have received measles vaccines under the campaign.

HPA has advised everyone who is unsure whether they have received both required doses of the measles vaccine to come forward and complete their vaccination.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that

spreads through coughing, sneezing, and close contact with an infected person. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that spreads across the body.

The disease can sometimes lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, brain inflammation, and other severe health problems, especially among young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

HPA has urged the public to remain alert, seek medical attention if symptoms appear, and ensure they are fully vaccinated to help prevent further spread of measles.
