A passenger ferry disaster in Guyana has left at least 27 people dead, while dozens remain missing after the vessel capsized off the country’s coast. The ferry, MV Barima, was travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma when it overturned, triggering a major search and rescue operation.
Authorities said 69 passengers have been rescued so far, while search teams continue efforts to locate missing passengers. Rescue operations involve government agencies, divers, private vessels and local fishermen searching the surrounding waters.
An investigation has been launched to determine what caused the ferry to capsize. Officials are examining possible
safety concerns, including passenger records and the actions of the ferry crew. Authorities have pledged a full investigation and said action will be taken if negligence is identified.
Families of missing passengers continue to await updates as rescue teams work to recover more victims and determine the full impact of the tragedy.
