Solar hybrid power systems with 6.4 MW solar capacity and battery storage have been inaugurated across 25 islands in Raa and Baa Atolls under the POISED project, marking a major step toward reducing diesel dependency and expanding renewable energy in the Maldives.

The Government of Maldives, in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the European Investment Bank (EIB), has inaugurated 6.4 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) hybrid power systems across 25 islands in Raa and Baa Atolls under the POISED project.
The systems were officially launched at a ceremony held in R. Kinolhas, attended by Climate Change, Environment and Energy Minister Ali Shareef, senior government officials, Fenaka Managing Director Muahmmad Afeef Hussain, and representatives from the Kinolhas Council.
Speaking at the event, State Minister Dr. Muaviyath Mohamed said the initiative marks major progress in expanding solar energy use in the Maldives. He noted that increasing renewable energy production would reduce fuel expenses and provide economic benefits for the country.
The newly completed systems include 6.36 MWp of solar PV capacity and 10 MWh of battery energy storage systems. According to the Environment Ministry, the project is expected to generate 10.4 GWh of clean energy annually,
saving more than 3 million litres of diesel and reducing around 8,400 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
With this addition, solar hybrid systems have now been completed in 97 islands under the POISED project, with a total installed capacity of 19.8 MWp solar PV and 20.6 MWh battery storage. The government aims to expand these efforts further as part of its target to generate 33 percent of the Maldives’ electricity from renewable sources by 2028.
