Practical work on a large rehabilitation centre in K. Hinmafushi, with a capacity of around 500 people at a time, is set to begin in July, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan has announced.
The project is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the treatment system for individuals affected by drug abuse, which authorities have described as a growing social, economic and national security concern in the Maldives.
According to Minister Ihusan, the new facility will be built to meet international standards and is expected to become the largest and most advanced rehabilitation centre in the country once completed.
The government has set a target of completing the project within 18 months, as part of its broader policy to expand rehabilitation and treatment capacity across the country.
As part of this initiative, additional rehabilitation centres are planned in N. Velidhoo, K. Kaashidhoo and L. Gan to decentralise services and increase national treatment capacity.
Minister Ihusan also highlighted ongoing institutional reforms within the National Drug Agency (NDA), as well as efforts to modernise the halfway house in Hulhumalé to improve rehabilitation and reintegration services.
The announcement comes amid continued government efforts to expand rehabilitation infrastructure in response to rising drug-related challenges across the Maldives.
