India and Seychelles Strengthen Ties, Discuss $175 Million Economic Package

India and Seychelles have reinforced their strategic partnership, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Patrick Herminie holding wide-ranging talks focused on economic cooperation, maritime security, and sustainable development. The two leaders also reviewed progress on India's US$175 million assistance package as both countries pledged to deepen bilateral ties.

India and Seychelles have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation following high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Seychelles President Patrick Herminie on Sunday.

The delegation-level discussions reviewed the full scope of India–Seychelles relations during Modi’s state visit to the East African island nation.

At a joint press conference, Prime Minister Modi said talks are progressing on India’s special economic assistance package worth $175 million, which was announced during the Seychelles President’s earlier visit to India.

He said the initiative covers key areas including social housing, transport, skill development, food security, education, and defence cooperation.

Modi also highlighted India’s broader vision for maritime security and regional prosperity in the Indian Ocean, describing it as a shared space of opportunity and responsibility.

“Our vision is to make the Indian Ocean an Ocean of Opportunity,”

data-start="984" data-end="1176">Modi said, adding that the security, sustainability, and prosperity of the region are a “shared responsibility” among nations.

Later in the day, Modi addressed the National Assembly of Seychelles, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to do so.

The Government of Seychelles also conferred on him the honorary title of “Guardian of the Blue Horizon,” in recognition of cooperation on climate change and environmental protection.

In a post on X, Modi said he dedicated the honour to countries working to combat climate change, calling it a “pressing challenge” that must be addressed collectively for future generations.
