BKMU Raises Alarm Over Below-Market Tuna Prices and Extended Delays at Processing Plants

The Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU) has voiced strong concerns over severe challenges facing yellowfin tuna fishermen, highlighting prolonged harbor waiting times and plummeting fish buying prices.

According to the union, fishermen are currently forced to wait long days in harbors just to weigh their catch and secure ice. Many captains report spending more days queued up at harbor facilities than actually fishing at sea.

The union revealed that average market rates for yellowfin tuna have dropped to approximately MVR 35 per kilogram. The combination of extended waiting times and changing price structures has significantly increased the rate of rejected fish, forcing vessel owners to sell their catch at unfair, below-market prices.

The issue follows previous protests organized by the BKMU over MIFCO's failure to purchase yellowfin tuna and declining market rates. While the government pledged during presidential campaigns to maintain yellowfin tuna prices between MVR 80 and MVR 100 per kilo, current purchase rates remain far below those expectations.
