Male’: Germany’s Federal Foreign Office has announced that its Honorary Consul’s office in the Maldives has closed until further notice, leaving emergency consular assistance to be handled by the German Embassy in Colombo.
In a notice dated October 2, the German Foreign Office said the embassy could only provide advice because no German representative was currently based in the Maldives. It also advised travellers to take the situation into account when planning trips to the country.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed concern over the closure, criticising the government’s approach to the honorary consul appointment.
In a post on X, Nasheed said the government wanted to replace the existing honorary consul with a person of its own choosing, adding that the German government had reservations about the move.
It is very worrying that the German government has decided to close the German Consulate office in the Maldives. This is again due to the government’s misguided approach. The government wanted to replace the Honorary Consul to the Maldives with a person of its own liking, and Germany had reservations about this.
