Malé: Pakistan and the Maldives are preparing for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s forthcoming visit to Pakistan, as both countries seek to strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation across several sectors.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, discussed preparations for the visit during a telephone conversation with Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam on October 10, according to Pakistan’s Press Information Department.
Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations and agreed to remain in close coordination to ensure a productive visit.
The upcoming visit follows discussions between the two countries’ foreign ministers on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 24.
According to Pakistan’s Associated Press of Pakistan, the ministers reviewed bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum in ties between the two countries.
They discussed expanding cooperation in trade, connectivity, economic relations, business-to-business links, academia and defence. Both sides also highlighted the importance of working together through multilateral forums, including the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.
Pakistan-Maldives relations have also featured in recent engagements between senior officials from both countries.
Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdullah met Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. Discussions covered regional security and bilateral cooperation, with both sides expressing their commitment to strengthening relations.
President Mohamed Muizzu’s expected visit to Pakistan is drawing attention to the Maldives’ diplomatic engagement with Islamabad. Recent discussions between senior officials from both countries have covered defence, trade, connectivity and economic cooperation.
Given the Maldives’ strategic location in the Indian Ocean, developments in its bilateral relationships are relevant to regional observers, including those in India. However, the implications of the upcoming visit will depend on its agenda and any concrete agreements announced by the two governments.
Further details, including the dates and agenda of President Muizzu’s upcoming visit, have not been provided in the announcements cited.
