Maldives embraces Islam

Islam came to the Maldives in 548 AH, corresponding to 1153 AD. Following the conversion of the Maldivian ruler, the entire country embraced Islam.

The first Maldivian king to accept Islam was Sultan Muhammad ibn Abdullah, also known as Dhovemi Kalaminja.

According to the historical account, Abul Barakat Yusuf al Barbari, a scholar from the Maghreb region, brought Islam to the Maldives.

The arrival of Islam marked a major turning point in the country’s history, shaping Maldivian society, culture, laws and traditions over the centuries.

As the Maldives marks 900 years since embracing Islam, First Lady Sajidha prayed that Allah would keep Maldivians on the guidance of Islam forever.
