Male’ – Maldives: President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the government’s reforms are based on facts, expert advice and technical studies, as he outlined measures to strengthen the economy and advance major development projects.

Speaking on Public Service Media’s “Nation Chat” podcast on Wednesday night, Muizzu said sustainable and meaningful reform requires integrity and honest discussion based on the realities of the issues.

Economic reforms

Muizzu said the government is implementing measures to strengthen the economy, including steps related to US dollars and the implementation of previously enacted laws.

He said decisions are made after consultations and studies involving academics and experienced professionals.

The President said the government’s goal is to expand the economy and that no decision would be taken that could hinder economic growth.

Thilamalé Bridge nearing completion

Muizzu also provided an update on the Thilamalé Bridge, saying internationally recognised firm AECOM is overseeing the project.

With Malé and Vilimalé already connected, he said the remaining work extending to Thilafushi is expected to be completed and the bridge opened to the public within a year.

Focus on engineering skills

The President also stressed the need to train more Maldivians in engineering and science.

He said while many students choose fields such as business and law, the country needs more civil, electronic and mechanical engineers to support national development.

Muizzu said strengthening local expertise in critical fields and advancing major infrastructure projects are central to building a strong and sustainable foundation for the country’s future.
