A 4.9 on Tripadvisor cannot simply be placed alongside a 9.5 on Booking.com and treated as an equivalent number. R24 therefore looked at the broader pattern: the volume of reviews, recent comments, service, accommodation, cleanliness, facilities and the aspects of the resort that guests consistently mention.
The physical resort was considered as well. A beautiful beach, good house reef, thoughtful villa design or excellent children’s facilities can make a meaningful difference to a holiday even when two properties have similar review scores.
One reason Maldives resorts are difficult to compare is that the resort itself is usually the destination. There is no city outside the gate, no restaurant street to explore in the evening and no easy option to change hotels halfway through the holiday.
The island, therefore, needs to suit the traveler. Someone who wants peace may find a large activity-focused resort overwhelming. A family may find a small adult-oriented island limiting. A diver may care far more about the reef than the size of the spa.
