MALE’: Voting to elect members to the Local Government Authority (LGA) Board began at 10:00 a.m. today, with polling scheduled to continue until 4:00 p.m.
A total of 19 ballot boxes have been set up for the election, including at the LGA office in Male’, government service centres in the atolls and the Hulhudhoo Social Centre.
The election has 807 eligible voters, comprising 625 councillors and 182 presidents of Women’s Development Committees (WDCs).
Under the Decentralisation Act, three positions on the LGA Board are to be filled through elections. However, Kulhudhuffushi City Mayor Mohamed Aathif was the only candidate nominated to represent city councils and has therefore been elected unopposed.
Today’s voting is being held to elect one representative from island councillors and another from WDC presidents. Although both positions are being voted for at the same polling stations, separate ballot papers with different colours will be used.
The LGA has said vote counting will begin within 30 minutes after polling closes. Provisional results are expected to be announced tonight, while the official final results are scheduled for November 3.
