MALE’, Maldives: Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission President Mohamed Farusath resigned today, saying unresolved challenges had hindered efforts to ensure the commission carries out its responsibilities fairly and equally towards all media outlets.

In his resignation letter addressed to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Farusath said the commission had faced difficulties that could not be resolved, prompting his decision to step down despite the work carried out during his tenure.

Fairness and Accountability in Media Regulation

Farusath said the law sets out clear responsibilities for the commission and its members, including upholding Maldivian media standards and ethical codes while fulfilling their duties fairly and impartially.

He stressed that these principles were essential to maintaining the commission’s credibility and purpose. He also expressed hope that media organisations would operate independently in their intellectual, financial and operational affairs while taking responsibility for safeguarding the rights of the public.

Following Farusath’s resignation, the commission comprises Vice-President Zam’ath Ahmed Waheed and members Safa Safeeg, Aminath Sarahath Izzath, Abdulaziz Ibrahim, Hussain Saqeef and Simaha Naseem.

Among the current members, Zam’ath, Abdulaziz, Saqeef and Simaha represent the media sector.
