AMMAN, Jordan: A Jordanian security officer was stabbed to death outside the Sri Lankan Embassy in Amman on Thursday, November 5, in an attack that authorities have described as a terrorist act.

The officer, identified as Corporal Jawad Ali Khalaf Al-Salaita, was on duty outside the embassy when a man attacked him with a sharp weapon, Jordan’s Public Security Directorate said. He was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries.

A police patrol intervened and arrested the suspect. A second security officer was injured during the confrontation while attempting to stop the attacker, who reportedly tried to seize the slain officer’s firearm. The injured officer was reported to be in stable condition.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect had planned an attack targeting public security personnel. Jordanian authorities have launched an investigation through the State Security Court to establish the circumstances and motive behind the assault.

The Sri Lankan Embassy confirmed that the incident occurred outside its premises and said all embassy staff and members of the Sri Lankan community in Jordan were safe.

Jordanian government spokesperson Mohammad Momani condemned the attack, describing assaults on security personnel as an attack on the state and the rule of law. King Abdullah II also reaffirmed Jordan’s commitment to combating terrorism and extremism.

The incident comes less than two weeks after a deadly shooting at a funeral in Jordan’s southern Karak governorate, where gunmen killed nine people and injured dozens. Authorities have not confirmed any connection between the two attacks.

Investigations into the Amman stabbing are continuing.
