LISBON: Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 41, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year journey with Portugal.

The announcement, made on Thursday, November 5, marks the end of one of the most influential international careers in football history. Ronaldo finishes with 234 appearances and 146 goals for Portugal, both men’s international records.

However, his departure comes amid controversy following a disagreement with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the national team.

The dispute followed Ronaldo’s departure from the team’s training camp without permission. He subsequently received a 30-day suspension, which had already been served, and a fine of 255 euros. The disagreement intensified after he was left out of the starting line-up, raising questions about his future with the national side.

His final appearance for Portugal came against Wales on September 24.

Despite the difficult ending, Ronaldo leaves behind a legacy that transformed Portugal’s standing in international football.

When he made his international debut in 2003, Portugal had yet to win a major international trophy. He later captained the country to its first European Championship title in 2016, defeating France in the final.

He also helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025, establishing the country as a major force in international football.

Ronaldo’s international journey included several memorable moments, from the disappointment of losing the Euro 2004 final on home soil to lifting the European Championship trophy 12 years later.

Beyond the trophies, his influence extended to a generation of Portuguese footballers who grew up watching him represent their country at the highest level.

His retirement also comes with several historic achievements, including scoring at six FIFA World Cup tournaments, another unprecedented record in men’s football.

Portugal’s Football Federation has praised his contribution and indicated that a special tribute will be organised to honour his career.

While the circumstances surrounding his departure have left a complicated final chapter, Ronaldo’s achievements and influence on Portuguese football remain central to his legacy.
